Mark H. Douma



Mark Douma is Of Counsel for New River Valley IP Law. He began his career working in the former Soviet Union sourcing inventions and technology to the United States. He has demonstrated success in obtaining patents for a start-up and in developing its patent portfolio to become a key factor in Corning later acquiring the start-up. His previous experience includes being Of Counsel to Roberts Mlotkowski Safran & Cole. Mr. Douma has experience in counseling in the context of multi-defendant, multi-year litigation and, in strategic cooperation with trial counsel, has been instrumental in obtaining jury trial wins and settlements.

Scientific areas of his practice include electrical and mechanical arts and inorganic chemistry and more particularly, epitaxial growth of semiconductor devices, and production of radio-pharmaceuticals. Consumer items he has obtained both utility and design patents for include drinking cups, among others. Additional areas of technical expertise include analog and digital electronic circuits, feedback control systems, infrared detectors, cryogenics, imaging systems, optical systems, deposition of thin films, and growth of bulk single crystals.

Of particular note, Mr. Douma’s experience in protracted patent litigation enhances his ability to render effective prosecution advice and strategies and to provide opinions of counsel in the context of infringement and validity.

Prior to law school, Mr. Douma was CEO of Mass. Mfg. Corp., a producer of electro-optical systems for DOD and private industry. He also developed the Vanguard electronic caries (cavity) detector for pediatric dentists which achieved national acclaim. He has also worked as an engineer in the aerospace industry and as a research associate in the field of materials science at MIT.
